Van Hollen Statement on Wheeler

U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen released the following statement regarding his vote opposing the confirmation of Andrew Wheeler as Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA):

“The mission of the EPA is to protect human health and the environment. The head of this Agency must fully embody these principles and support the goals that come alongside this mission – from improving water quality, to protecting America’s wildlife and treasures like the Chesapeake Bay, to minimizing air pollution and tackling climate change and its consequences. President Trump’s assault on our environment and attack on efforts to combat climate change make this position and the EPA’s mission even more crucial. His proposed ‘Presidential Committee on Climate Security’ spearheaded by notable climate denier William Happer is a stark example of why we need someone at the helm of the EPA who can lead on these issues. In my review of Mr. Wheeler’s record – including his push for a dirty power plan that would exacerbate climate change and his proposal to revoke the clean car waiver that has helped curb emissions in Maryland – I do not believe he will move the Agency forward. I will continue fighting every day in the Senate to address these challenges in a meaningful way to ensure Maryland families will have access to clean air, clean water, and a clean environment for generations to come.”
