Van Hollen Statement on Senate Intelligence Briefing

Today, U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) released the following statement regarding the intelligence briefing received today by members of the Senate regarding President Trump’s strikes on Iran:

“Nothing I learned from the briefing today would justify President Trump’s decision to bomb Iran or his failure to obtain Congressional approval as required by the Constitution. While we all agree that Iran cannot obtain a nuclear weapon, U.S. intelligence has consistently shown that more time for diplomacy existed. Furthermore, the results of this strike show that the only durable path to preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon is through diplomacy – something that may now be more difficult to achieve.”
