Van Hollen Statement on Memorial Day

U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen released the following statement in recognition of Memorial Day:

"As we gather with family and friends this Memorial Day, withsome people heading to the beach and others having their backyard barbeque, it's important for us to reflect on what Memorial Day is all about. It's a time for us to thank and to honor the men and women who have served us and who have given their lives in defense of our country -- people whose sacrifices make our freedom possible. It's not enough simply to do that in words.

"We need to do that through deeds, and the best way to do that is to dedicate ourselves to making sure the men and women who are serving us today, at home and abroad, get the very best support that a grateful nation can provide. That means making sure they have the equipment they need in the field, and making sure our men and women and veterans here at home get the very best health care. It means making sure they have economic opportunities and educational opportunities through the G.I. Bill, and small business opportunities. And it meansmaking sure that we end the scourge of veterans' homelessness and we address the tragic consequences of suicide among our veterans. So, this is a time to reflect, but also a time to dedicate ourselves to the work that is yet to be done as we thank those who have served us."
