Van Hollen, Cardin, Trone Announce $732,410 for Education, Health Care, Recreation, and Economic Projects in Western Maryland
Today, U.S. Senators Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin and Congressman David Trone (all D-Md.) announced $732,410 in Appalachian Regional Commission funding for six projects in Western Maryland.
“Western Maryland is growing. As its educational institutions, local governments, and nonprofits work together to support this growth, our Delegation is fighting to secure investments that support the region’s priorities,” said the lawmakers. “These federal funds will support Western Maryland communities in a range of ways – including preparing students to meet local workforce needs through advanced education and training, providing local families access to healthcare services and boosting the region’s growing outdoor recreation opportunities.”
The following projects received awards:
- $250,000, Frostburg State University: To purchase remote sensing equipment to support education goals, develop workforce skills and gain a better understanding of the infrastructural impacts of coal mining in Western Maryland.
- $243,750, Garrett County: To plan the final segment of the Meadow Mountain Trail, which will connect to Deep Creek State Park.
- $95,300, Hagerstown Community College: For workforce training for dental hygiene students.
- $80,000, Allegany College of Maryland: To purchase state-of-the-art computer technology for the nursing, medical assistant, and continuing education/workforce development programs.
- $36,685, Western Maryland Area Health Education Center: To support health screenings and care for low-income families through the Center’s Innovation Readiness Training Medical Mission project.
- $26,675, UMCES Appalachian Environmental Laboratory: To upgrade the Laboratory’s nutrient analysis system, which will support student research and the analytical water and soil testing needs of environmentally focused businesses and organizations in Allegany County.
The Appalachian Regional Commission is an economic development agency of the federal government and 13 state governments focusing on 423 counties across the Appalachian region.
