Baltimore Congressional Delegation Announces More than $3 Million in Federal Funding to Support Maryland Hospitals for COVID-19 Response Efforts

Today, U.S. Senators Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin and Congressmen Dutch Ruppersberger, John Sarbanes, and Kweisi Mfume (all D-Md.) announced $3,814,136 in federal funding to support Maryland hospitals, Sinai Hospital and Northwest Hospital, for emergency protective measures taken during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, frontline workers across our state mobilized to serve Marylanders and provide critical help to those in need,” said the lawmakers. “This FEMA funding will reimburse Sinai Hospital and Northwest Hospital for their efforts to protect their medical staff and patients as they performed vital testing and treatment for COVID-19 patients and to ensure adequate staffing and supplies were available. We will keep working to secure additional resources to support Maryland’s first responders and healthcare heroes and invest in our public health infrastructure.”

Funding will be divided between two projects:

  • $2,417,351.36 in federal funding to reimburse Sinai Hospital in Baltimore City for the utilization of contracts for medical staff to support temperature checks, testing, and treatment of COVID-19 patients; force account materials to perform emergency protective measures by the provision, and distribution of PPE supplies and commodities, and materials in the form of brochures and stickers that provide communications to disseminate public information regarding health and safety measures and provide warnings about risks and hazards; and purchases including N95s, respirators, gowns, and shoe covers.
  • $1,396,785.09 in federal funding to reimburse Northwest Hospital in Randallstown for purchased PPE, cleaning supplies, and other materials/equipment to set up and support an additional 11 rented beds and contracted labor to assist in providing medical care.

Funding is awarded through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and is authorized under Section 403 of the Robert T. Stafford Act.
