Van Hollen, Cardin Announce $350,000 Grant for STEM Education at Bowie State

Today U.S. Senators Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin (both D-Md.) announced that the National Science Foundation has awarded a $350,000 grant to Bowie State University to improve STEM education through collaborative project-based learning.

"As STEM education becomes increasingly important to preparing Maryland's students for in-demand jobs, we must also evaluate and improve our strategies for teaching these critical skills,"said Senator Van Hollen."This grant will help Bowie State further improve its STEM courses to give more students the opportunity for success in high-tech careers."

"STEM skills are integral in today's economy. This investment in our children will help ensure that the next generation has the knowledge and competency to compete," said Senator Cardin. "This is about both our students' success and our own, as Maryland needs more science, technology, engineering and math professionals to excel in the global marketplace. I'm grateful for Bowie State for working to improve their STEM training offerings. This is precisely the kind of federal investment we should be making across the state, in all our children."

Bowie State University will study the impact of collaborative project-based learning on freshmen enrolled in STEM courses and examine the underlying instructional system. The project is designed to also enhance the educational research skills of STEM faculty through their engagement in research. More information on the grant is available here.
