Van Hollen gives first speech on Senate floor


Amidst a hot debate over repealing Obamacare, U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen delivered his first speech on the Senate floor Thursday.

Van Hollen acknowledged that appearing this early on the Senate floor is unusual, but he's extremely concerned with, "wiping out access to affordable care for 30 million Americans.”

He says this would "create total chaos throughout the American health care system."

Chris Van Hollen Discusses His Newest Role As U.S. Senator

Chris Van Hollen was sworn in on Tuesday afternoon as Maryland's newest senator.

This morning, he joined WBAL's Bryan Nehman to discuss the big move. 

"I've worked hard to campaign throughout the (entire) state," the former House member said. "I hope to govern by listening and by acting in the best interest of all Marylanders."

Van Hollen marks a new era for Maryland in the senate

WASHINGTON - For almost a decade Maryland has had the same look in Senate, but now that's changed with former congressman now Senator, Chris Van Hollen.

Like retired Sen. Barbara Mikulski, Van Hollen will sit on the Senate's Appropriations committee meaning he'll be able to chime in when the state needs federal monies.
